We are all learners: dogs, students and instructors and we learn better in a supportive positive atmosphere. It is my job to ensure the learning experience is fun and rewarding for you and your dog. I will help you evaluate your dog’s unwanted behavior and understand the motivation behind it so that new behaviors can be introduced that more readily fit into your lifestyle.
I follow the methods of positive reinforcement training. Those methods will help foster a trusting relationship so that learning is enjoyable for all. Event markers such as a verbal signal or a clicker will be used to let your dog know that it performed a desired behavior. Reinforcement, usually in the form of food, will be given to the dog after the marker signal to increase the likelihood of the behavior being repeated. Environmental adjustments will be made when necessary to ensure the dog advances along a path of improvement. Using this method, dogs of all ages are able to learn the concepts and modify their behavior.
From my earliest memories to current day, some of my happiest moments have been in the company of animals. Dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, horses and cows were all part of my childhood. I my early teens, I took my puppy to his and my first obedience class. Since then, I have attended hundreds of obedience classes and have learned many different ways to train dogs. The method that makes the most sense to me and has had the greatest results is positive reinforcement training. For the last several years, in addition to attending training classes with service dog puppies, I have acted as a volunteer assistant to positive reinforcement dog trainers and have taught classes on my own. Being close to Marin Humane Society, Sacramento SPCA and UC Davis has allowed me to attend numerous classes on animal behavior and training. Eventually, I decided I wanted to understand the techniques and science behind clicker training better so I enrolled in and completed the Karen Pryor Dog Training Professional course and earned the certification of Karen Pryor Academy – Certified Training Partner (KPA-CTP). I continue to expand my knowledge by attending the annual three day Clicker Expo and other area events.
